You know last, I’m trying to think, it was so long ago. I just remember we finished our last clinical. It was like the week after that and I went to one Practicum day, which is like, it's kind of like our last clinical before we become nurses. Like we are essentially on our own doing our own thing and I just I remember in Practicum actually getting the news notification about Tom Hanks getting Covid and that's when it like kind of started to become real because at clinical we were all “oh this is just gonna be like the flu like not the big of a deal” but then as like, it was literally the next week I was like this is getting serious. Like this isn't a joke. So we actually finished and then everything was on line. I can tell you I blacked out those last few months because I think it was just like a mix of disappointment, you know, like how are we... like not knowing what's going on, and like having to finish nursing school, which requires complete hands on online? And there expecting us you know to go into the field a few months later. So that was kind of, it was difficult, I don't know it was just like the weirdest feeling, I don't even know how to describe it. But I think the one thing that helped me get through was our professor, one of my professors, she's like “I’m not even gonna have you guys do a final. What I’m gonna have you do is just do journals about how you're feeling, how you're doing, how you're coping through all this. And that actually really, I didn't realize how much that would help me because like writing it down kind of felt like a palpable, a tangible, a real thing. It wasn’t just I don’t know what I’m feeling. But writing it down it's like this is what I’m feeling and it helped me see it and I was able to kind of accept the situation a little more and um... Yeah so that was last semester. So I work at Sinai [Hospital of Baltimore] now and they emailed us and they were like because of Governor Larry Hogan’s emergency state of order how like these nursing students can come in and work that was a little frightening ‘cause its was look traditionally you know you graduate, you get two - three months off, then you start working. But they were like no you guys can come in now. And I was like I don't know if I know anything. I started working in June and I got my license in July. So that started everything. Can you kind of go into just a little bit of what your day to day is as a nurse, a new nurse? So the unit I work on, I work on an intermediate care, it's not quite ICU and it's not quite a regular floor, so we're kind of inbetween. Although the intermediate care on my floor it could be ICU. I remember coming in and they were like “Oh yeah this is the Covid unit” and I’m like “That's wonderful. That's great.” But I’ll say this my third day there I was doing CPR on a person and I’m like, they weren't Covid thank god, but that, that was a little bewildering. But typically we just monitor the patients. Make sure that things are okay, but these patients could flip on you so quickly. Like they could be fine and the next thing you know they’re in ICU. I’ve seen it happen so many times with Covid and non-Covid. I will say during the summer it was okay. The Covid was manageable. We had Covid patients but it wasn’t overwhelming like it is now. But it was really interesting during the beginning when I started because you know the Remdesivir was coming out and Dexamethasone and the plama and all these treatments were coming out so I was kind of there with like the older nurses giving these treatments for Covid. That was interesting. I thought that was very cool. But we also get like non-Covid patients, but their very, very sick patients and it’s sad, but you find the smallest detail or change in them and your like this is going to go downhill very quickly. So that's why it's like we need to pick up on these things very quickly. I wanna send them to, I tell them I don’t want you to be here, I want you to be on a regular med-surg floor that's what I want, but. We’ve had patients there for, there was one patient who was there for like four months. And all the nurses knew him because he went between our floor, ICU, then came back down to us. Yeah it's just, it’s a strange time to be a new nurse. ‘Cause they always say your first year is gonna be your hardest cause you're still adjusting, you're still learning how to manage your time and assess these patients and pick up on those small changes. But right now it’s like sometimes, some days, it's just like you're just in a machine mode you just wanna get stuff done, but make sure everyone is still okay. Going into, obviously when you choose your major way back when before this was even a thought in your head, how did you almost come to terms with this is what I thought nursing was gonna be and this is what I thought I was gonna be doing and now here I am doing something completely different? It’s actually funny that you ask that question cause, so I went into nursing I became interest in it because my cousin was going to nursing school but then I had to go to the hospital when I was like sixteen and i was liek I wanna be a nurse like that's what I wanna do. Now I thought throughout high school, throughout college, I would say even until probably my last semester in college I’m like I’m gonna be working in pediatrics. I’m gonna be working with kids. That's what I’m gonna do. Then you know I went through my critical care clinical and I’m like I love this. This is what I wanna do. And I loved pediatrics like my clinical was on an adolescent floor and I couldn’t do little kids. I realized that I couldn’t do the little ones. I could do adolescents. They're chill, they're about our age, they understand. My direction completely flipped cause I thought I was gonna be working in one field and now I’m working with old people and I love them. I love my old people. And I’m working in critical care. Like I never thought that would happen. You know even junior year I’m like nursing is so great you get to interact with the patients. I mean they seem stressed but you know with like, even when we were in the ICU for my clinical it was like okay this is kind of a controlled situation, it's stressful, but it's controlled. I would never have thought when I started it would just be whatever's going on now. That was another thing I was struggling with when it first started cause I was like, I had to learn that this was out of my control, this is out of a lot of peoples control. So I kind of have to roll with the punches and it's a lot of punches but. It's something we have to get through and everyone keeps telling me this is going to make you a stronger nurse like every nurse is going through this right now. It's not just the new grads. I thought nursing was going to be comepekty different. Not this whole pandemic, everyones dying, no. And I also, one thing I didn't realize was the emotional connection you make with your patients. That's one thing I really like. I think we have this tendency to go in and be like okay you're just kind of checking things off getting through your day you know. You see them as patients. It’s when they have family come in and you're talking to the family that light switch is like this could be my grandmother, my mother, you know like they’re a human being too. You do develop such an emotional connection with them. I’m like I don't know these people, they’re strangers to me but you feel like you know them so well by the end of your shift and it's even better if you have them like multiple days in a row cause it’s like I know you and I know if something changes I know how to tell the doctor. In the beginning when you first realized that you were gonna be going to work at a hospital sooner than you thought you would, were you afraid or like what emotions were you feeling then? I think part of it, I was definitely a little afraid especially knowing I was going on a Covid unit and knowing that I missed my practicum, I missed a while clinical, and I just felt a little underprepared. But also, most people in my class didn't start working until August. So I realized okay I’m able to get this practice, this experience, cause I was still a student at the time I didn't have my license so it was technically like a clinical, but I was like okay this is gonna be okay, I’m just getting extra practice and I won’t be walking in as nurse not knowing what to do I’ll have some idea of what I’m doing when I’m officially licensed. As a twenty one, twenty two year old it's like I feel like this has taken away from my early twenties. Like I should not be working this early. I just wanna have some fun. So I mean there was like the professional side of it, but also like I had just got out of college I missed the end, I wasn’t the only one but, missing the end of senior year is like there’s so much I still need to do. Like have fun. I don’t wanna waste my time at work but I’m happy that I did start early cause I felt very, very prepared once I was on my own. In terms of you know you go to work and then you come home what are some of the things that you do to kind of like destress, decompress like at least try to? Wine. Wine. Wine. No, lately it's been wine. It's been a little stressful the past couple weeks but on a normal basis I come home I realize that I need to showerbecause that actually relaxes me. I really enjoy reading. It kind of takes my mind away from everything. And you know over the summer when things were a little better and we could you know see people easier I would make it a point to go see my friends. ‘Cause that way I was like going out. I wasn't at work, we were just having fun. Spending time with friends and reading have been like my two biggest things. Lately it’s been wine, but that’s gonna end soon ‘cause everyones gonna be following the rules and we're not gonna be having this keep going on. And honestly my coworkers are like great. They’re so supportive so at least I don't have that stressful aspect. And it’s always fun cause like after work we’ll walk out together and just talk about random stuff and even yesterday when I got off of work there was a group of us we were just standing in the middle of the hallway talking. Like we were about to leave, but I don't know we were just talking for a good twenty minutes and that was just really relaxing to just take my mind of the day and you know like cause the way we tell stories is just like it makes the situation so much better if you tell it in a way that’s funny even if it's probably not appropriate but its just how we get through. I think that's it for questions that I have. So unless there's anything else that you wanna make sure that you get to mention? One thing that will always stick with me is I walked into, this was my first day on the unit, I walk in this patient’s room, he was about to get downgraded but he was like “You know what gets me a hospital stay?” I’m like what? He’s like I always say “This to will pass.” And I’m like that's when I was just like oh my goodness. Like it's so true it will pass when I don't know. But I think having that mentality, just you have to go in with a positive attitude cause just having a negative one it’s just its gonna make your day so much worse. That was probably the one thing that has stuck with me this entire time and is still sticking with me. Also everyone please get your vaccines. Please get you vaccines the flu one and when they [Covid vaccines] become available in the near future. I just want everyone to know like we will get through this. Location The location of the interview Zoom Transcription Any written text transcribed from a sound Could you just say a little bit about yourself, like where you went to school and what your major was. So I went to school at Temple University in Philadelphia and I had a double major in advertising with a concentration in art direction and visual studies. Coronavirus was declared a pandemic March 11th so do you remember much about the days around that? Yeah I do because on Monday [March 9th] I told my night class, “Say goodbye now because in two days we won't be in school.” And they called me crazy and then class was canceled for the indefinite future. So with classes being canceled and moved on line did you stay in philadelphia or did you go home? Yeah I had an apartment there so I stayed. An off campus apartment. So what was it like adjusting to online classes? I had taken online classes before and one of them was actually already on line. So I was pretty used to that and because of my majors a lot of the work I did was digital anyways. So the submission process is pretty much the same. But I did see a lot of other art students struggling because they didn't have access to the studios anymore. What were you feeling towards going online? How did that make you feel? I was pretty excited. I had an 8am twice a week that I was just not going to make it to anymore. Like I just knew that, that wasn’t going to last. But then it was much easier to just open my laptop and get online from my bed. So obviously not missing class itself what did you miss about suddenly having to go to school online and having to stay at home? Definitely like the socialization part. Like not seeing anybody a lot of people went home after it hit. That's probably it, the social part. During the early days of the pandemic were you afraid of the Coronavirus? Did you think that it was gonna be a big thing? Well, two years ago I had this class and they asked everybody what your biggest fear was. What are you afraid of? Weirdly like everyone said like school shootings when we were in college and I was like, “What you really should be afraid of is a pandemic. Because that's the inevitable in our lifetime.” So I wasn’t scared. Also as you probably know my mom raised me as a little germaphobe so I was already wiping down and hand sanitizing and doing all of those things and not touching things in public. When school finished and you moved back home what was that like? Definitely feels weird. It feels like I’m back in high school except now I have a job and no high school. But I have dreams that I have to go to school and like I don't have any dreams about college but I have a ton about high school. But like if I had to go to highschool now like I go to school in the dream and they're like everybody wear your mask. But obviously that didn't happen when we were in school. So it feels like regression. What was it like kind of transiting from being in college, not even finishing your senior year in person, to then going out into the “real world” and getting a job? So I found a job listing in April online and we just did all the interviews and stuff over the phone. And a lot of people on their design team was already remote so they were already pretty used to that sort of work flow. It does feel a little weird not to have been working there now pretty much six months and not having met them is a little odd. But I like working from home so it's working for me. I watched pretty much from beginning to end 90 day fiance and all the spin offs during the first few months of the pandemic. So would you say tv was your coping mechanism/ your destresser during this whole thing? Yeah. That and smoking a ton of weed. Like aton. Like a stupid amount. Like awake to asleep. Right before the Coronavirus I went to my dealer and he had a deal on shake, just the leftover, and I bought a quarter pound for like half price. So for like the enrite pandemic I had it made. I didn't even have to go see him. It lasted for four months. Actually really for five, until I moved out. So living in an apartment did you have roommates? I had one roommate and she didn't come out of her room until 7pm every single night. That answers that question. To watch 90 day fiance. Which she had already watched most of. But she wanted to watch it with somebody else. We definitely watched a lot of other tv too. We watched that whole Tiger King thing when it first came out. I said, “Listen this is gonna be in all the memes so we better watch it now.” Would you say that your relationship with your roommate changed at all through the pandemic? It definitely got better because last year she didn't invite me to her birthday party so I hadn't spoken to her from May of last year, and that entire summer, and then I went to study abroad so I wasn't even living with either. And when I came back I wasn't really talking to her so we got pretty close again after that because we were forced to I guess. Otherwise I would have held out to the end of the year. Being the semi-germaphobe that you are, did you find it difficult to go to the store and get what you needed during the pandemic? I haven't been to a grocery store since that Monday when I said everyone it's gonna close. Because I wanted to make tacos and then I had only been to CVS from then on since March. So did you do all your grocery shopping at CVS? I got this thing called Hungryroot that delivered food once a week and cooked from that. But I had started that like right before the pandemic. Then also Ubereats, alot. Especially in Philly cause it's like a city it's not like being here where it's like three things onUbereats it's like a whole ton of stuff. So was your boyfriend still at Temple when this happened? No he had moved to, he had gotten a job in December and moved to Jersey City and got an apartment. Were you able to see him at all during the Pandemic? Yeah I would just get picked up from Temple. And now my home is in [New] Jersey so I would just drive up to Jersey City and just stay longer like a weekend or something. And just do class from there. One of my classes turned into a therapy session because every single day it was how's the pandemic making you feel? And then I had to listen to like five people sob stories about how depressed they were. It's like we're all depressed Karen. Like it was like can we talk about something else? I'm thinking about it every waking moment anyways can we just do something else? I sphere anything else you wanted to talk about? The thing that pisses me off most about this whole thing is that everyone goes Fauci said not to wear a mask in the beginning and that's only half the statement. He said, “Please don't buy the masks. Don't panic buy the masks because the t healthcare workers need them.” Okay. he never said it wasn't effective or it wouldn't be helpful but the entire country was looked down upon nobody needed the damn mask. We were out of toilet paper. If he had said go buy a mask please the hospitals would have been in ruins. A few days before campus closed I did see a girl wearing a mask though and I was like that seems like a little bit much. And I was like but maybe she's onto something here. I’m Jackie Gassler. I went to school at FIT, which is the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York [City]. I was an illustration major and I just finished up my last year the start of this year. I'm a comic book artist. I like that kind of stuff. I do that in my free time. If you remember the [Coronavirus] pandemic was declared a pandemic on March 11th , do you remember what was happening in your life at the time, like schoolwise and all of that? I remember when it kind of got more serious, I guess. We were in, me and my friend, were actually in one of our digital design classes, and he was freaking out about getting sick. I was like, “Nick, you're not gonna get sick.” He’s kind of like a little bit of a hypercondriac with like if you even mention any kind of sickness he thinks he has it at some point. So of course he was like look at the symptoms. And he was asking me what the symptoms were. I was like you don't have any of these like you're okay. It's okay right now. He’s fine so yeah. It was fine. But I remember that happening and that was the last day before we didnt go back anymore. So I think that was different and what else? I remember, cause I got up at six in the morning to get on the train to get to school. So I think I remember my mom saying, “This is your last day like before.” Cause I think we were gonna do a week out of school. And then they were gonna try and figure out what they wanted to do afterwards. And I think that was the last day of saying I think this is probably gonna be our last day of school. And I was like yep. This is probably gonna be the last day. It was an interesting experience. To say the least. With you being an art student what was that like having to transition into online classes? Most weren't that bad just because in my thesis class, and we had just general illustration classes. So we had so a lot of that was already like, if you're doing like digital art you’re on your computer anyway doing your stuff sitting in the classroom. And it's very individualized, even if you're doing traditional art you're sitting at this thing doing your traditional art. So really being able to do it at home literally was just like “okay I don't have to sit in my class anymore I just sit at home and do it instead.” So that wasn't that hard to like to transfer over. But then I had a live model class where you literally every week had nude models come in to pose and you would have to do like sketches of them. So that didn't happen anymore. It was mostly just got turned into him going, “Okay here's this one person pictured. Just draw this from the screen.” So it kind of didn't really transition well. And then we had teachers that just gave up and were like never mind. Were not doing class anymore apparently. And that was like the easy business class. I don't know why. I think he just gave up and didn't know how to use the computer. So that was kind of it. That was interesting. With last semester being your senior semester, your last semester of school, and that being cut short what do you miss most about going to school? And what do you feel like you missed out on with it ending the way that it did? I think mostly I probably miss the people that I went to school with and like teachers obviously. I think cause a lot of the art stuff was getting really individualized you really weren't doing things in groups. It was very like to yourself. But I think the people that we had a very small major and by the end of it, it was even smaller, so I think you kind of got very close knit to the people that are around you. So I think that, that definitely, like we still talk to each other like we have a group chat and discord and we [talk] to each other. But I think seeing them every day was like okay we won't see eachother anymore that's kind of sad. So I think that was definitely probably the most, the thing that was like disappointing was I didn’t get another how many months with like the people I liked so. You already lived at home and with commuting but what was it like to then have to be at home and stay at home? And not then have the outlet of going to school? I mean definitely I don't miss commuting because I was literally going for the week of like waking up at five in the morning or no six in the morning catching a seven oclock train getting to school at nine and then having to go in directly to the class and then being in class from nine in the morning to nine at night and then getting on a train and then getting home at midnight. I don't miss that at all. That was a terrible experience I never want to continue. So that was fine not having to do that anymore. But definitely just being inside and not going out and everything. We didn't have too many breaks at school but it was still cool to just walk around the city and just walk around the streets and just kind of kill time. You kind of miss that like a little bit of that like, not freedom, but just a little bit like just change of scenery. I think that definitely was a, yeah I think just the change of scenery, liking being in a different state also. Cause like where I live is very like suburbia so it was just having the city of like, I was gonna say street walking but I’m not gonna say that, just it was different. I think that was definitely having to adjust back to just being in the suburbs full time. With that adjustment and obviously everything in the world being crazy what are some of the things you do to kind of like cope with all of this and kind of like take your mind off of everything? For me I was mostly, since this all started I was doing a lot more, well after school kind of ended I got to do a little more, but I’m a self publisher for my comics and everything. So I definitely dov into that more. I started a new series called Vices and I actually recently within the past few months got the first issue out and now I’m working on the second. Because I'm still inside and don't do much other than go to my regular job. So I think definitely being able to like write and draw and that kind of stuff with my comics definitely kept me sane in a way. And being able to kind of like, I had so much time on my hands that I had to do something cause I was getting a little bit stir crazy. I was like I’m sitting here not doing anything so I had to create something. So having a comic to self public was very nice. Is there anything you wanna talk about? Is there anything that stuck out for you in this whole thing? Stuck out? I think it was interesting that like I mean, I feel like everyone has the story of really being secluded in their house and not being able to go out so I think that it was interesting what came from that. Like everyone definitely handled it differently. Like I have so many friends, I have you and Lauren, like how you guys handled it versus people that I knew from school, versus people that I knew from home and everything. I think just like how everyone just probably got to know themselves a little too much. Cause I definitely know people who are life friends who are saying stuff like oh what they did during, just like being in the house and everything. So I think it was interesting to like your stuck inside with yourself for weeks on end and having to deal with yourself is probably not the best for that long. I think that was definitely something that stuck out was just.. You think about a lot of things. I think being alone with your thoughts was definitely a little eye opening I think. You change and you grow. I think just from me knowing you for so long [eight years] how have you been coping with not being able to go to concerts? Oh my god that's been terrible. I mean I think with the last one I went to I wanted to say it was in January and we saw Motionless [in White] I think in New York [City]. If I knew then what I know now I would have totally went harder at that concert. In the beginning I used to go to like one concert per month or every few months and everything. So definitely not being able to go see live music has been hard. And I have to deal with just like the people, cause I mean even them [the artists] are not really creating to, too much because a lot of people can't be together and create a lot of music. So I think even like there are slow realises and everything but it's been hard. But I;m also saving money on it. So like I think that's also a thing of like well I’m not going out as much but I’m also I can spend more money on other things. So I think it’s kind of a give and take. But also like I know that once they start opening up more and being able to do live music I think I’m definitely gonna go a little overboard with that and just go to like every single thing I can get to, to like make up from this year. I was gonna see Rammstein so I;m missing that. How has it been for you trying to stay in contact with the people that you used to see like on the reg, every day, every other day, like all the time? How's that been? For me I think, I have my one really good friend Taylor from school and I mean like we've, she’s lived at school for all four years so we've always talked to each other. So that's been no problem of staying in contact. I remember before I said that our illustration department has a group chat that we all get to talk about and talk about like art projects that were doing and if we need help. It was like a nice so we kind of stay together. Definitely with you guys it was nice to hang out with you that one time at the park. That was a good break from this. My other friend, my home friend from high school, we do talk a little more. It's interesting cause you don't really get to see them as much as or at all as you used to so you have to find more things to do without seeing each other. Like definitely we've done a lot more movie nights of just like screen recording and like trying to hang out and watch movies or zoom calls and everything. But definitely a lot more movie nights that we've been doing of like just groups of watching movies and shows that we've been wanting to watch. So that was very nice. So kind of along that vein any unforeseen benefits from this whole thing? To this? Well again I really like that I got my comic out that I;ve wanted to do so I think that was a benefit. I think I wouldn't have had time to do this. So I think that was a good benefit of all of this. I don't have to wake up at six oclock in the morning anymore and go on the train for two hours one way. So that's very good. I don't have to get home at midnight. So that was good. As much as I said that it's hard to be alone with yourself for a while I think it was good to like kind of step back and you have to kind of reevaluate yourself in a way. So think that was like a good growing technique of just having to live with yourself and be by yourself cause like I mean honestly when all this eventually passes most of us will be moving on to more of an adult life of having to move out from your parents and that kind of thing. I think it's like interesting, maybe this was some sort of not first try but like an interesting way to think about it.
