Text Any textual data included in the document <div style="text-align:center;">Spirituality and Death: Living with COVID-19 An Interview with Vidya </div> <div style="text-align:center;">This interview was conducted and recorded over the phone with my cousin Vidya Warrier who is currently moving from New Jersey to Tennessee. </div> It was a classic watercooler talk at the office when Vidya heard about the Coronavirus in early February, standing around with her coworkers at Johnson and Johnson discussing and joking about the "Chinese virus" and the danger of a New Jersey lockdown. The joke quickly changed its tone as New York had its first case and spread exponentially: posters were put up to promote awareness, and big events were getting closed down very quickly. Despite the noticeable change in the atmosphere, people were aloof throughout New York, ignoring social guidelines and warnings, continuing their lives in a typical fashion. Vidya couldn’t help but share this nonchalance as she was socially coerced into meetings and lunches despite the rumored warnings and quickly became desensitized. The toilet paper war was on, and Vidya was a serious “Warrier” in this battle as well. Although she found the whole situation somewhat amusing and asinine, she was still forced to stock up as the downward spiral of competition and capitalism took effect. Going to the vitamin, grocery, and Indian stores, Vidya stocked up on herbs and dietary supplements, but also essential staples like dal and rice. Additionally, at home, she turned to her developing YouTube channel (The Dancing Warrier) to record her experiences with the virus and the emerging social atmosphere. This began before she was quarantined and continued well into her isolation as it depicted her newly secluded, and somewhat freeing life. For Vidya, the initial carelessness had severe consequences. In early March, Johnson and Johnson had its first case of Coronavirus; an employee on Vidya's floor contracted the Coronavirus from her husband, who recently returned from Italy on a business trip. Concerned, the office closed down, but not before Vidya herself contracted the virus (tested a few days later, almost right as, or right before, tests started becoming available on March 5) and was faced with a reality unknown to the general American populace before the first wave happened and the pandemic was declared. The exhaustion hit immediately – at home, Vidya felt the beckoning allure of her mattress and comforter, preferring to stay in bed all day with a rising fever and "feeling like something was off…feeling bad". To most, it would be natural to indulge in a frenzy of google searches, exploring cures, treatments, and home care to alleviate the symptoms and to confirm the diagnosis. For Vidya, who has lived her life studying and practicing yoga (specifically isha yoga) and spirituality, and even living much of her life under Sadhguru in the Isha Foundation, she was cautious and aware of the fragility of her psyche and the natural primal fear response that she would necessarily face. As such, withdrawing completely into her intense yogic practices and restorative silence, Vidya focused on spiritual practices centered around the breath and how it manifests in life and death. Although her past experience with yoga and comfort with metaphysical concepts like death prepared her for facing such a dangerous and significant affliction, Vidya found the experience of being infected as a cathartic and profound exploration into her relationship and attitudes towards death. To Vidya, the Coronavirus was a test of her will and ideologies in practices, and fortitude of spirit. Engaging in a modality of a simple diet, powerful mantric-centered meditation, spiritual yogic practices, and ayurvedic and other home remedies, Vidya found the Coronavirus as a method of introspection and a source of spiritual "bliss". Many of her accounts and emotions were recorded and archived in real time through her YouTube channel which she found to be a healthy outlet for her expression. She made videos about her new diet and style of cooking, new habits and daily routines, as well as very raw accounts of her experiences with COVID and the effect of her yogic practices on her situation. These were the first days for Vidya, before life changed in any notable way for most Americans. The genesis for her relationship with COVID predated the March 11 CDC announcement and general societal chaos. Although she ascribed to the classic stocking-up practices and nonchalant attitude widely shared by many in society in late February/early March, Vidya had a unique experience being infected by the Coronavirus early on. It tested her roots, but her spirituality and yogic treatments made these times a transformative experience for her. Text Any textual data included in the document First Days: Juan’s Account The arrival of the Coronavirus and the lack of preparation for its arrival affected nearly everyone in the U.S. I reached out to a co-worker named Juan who agreed to share with me his experiences in dealing with the outbreak of COVID-19. I interviewed Juan on the 26th of September 2020 during our lunch break at work; we work in a restaurant where I work the line and he washes dishes. He was receptive of the idea when I asked to interview him; he was probably more surprised than anything, about my desire to interview him. But I chose him specifically because I believe his experiences could serve as a contrast to mine. While we are both of Mexican origin, there are also differences in our lives, I live in the suburbs of Old Bridge, whereas Juan lives in the city of Freehold. I still live with my parents, free of the burdens of paying rent, while he lives with his brother in an apartment. I am interviewing him so that I can get a different perspective on COVID-19 from someone whose life is different from mine. The first question I asked him was if he remembered what his life was like before the pandemic started. He exclaimed that his days were primarily spent going to work most of the week while spending his free time playing games online or drawing art. When I asked him if he remembered what he did exactly on March 11 (the day WHO declared COVID a pandemic), he admitted he didn’t remember at all. We shared a laugh when I told him that I really didn’t remember either. He told me that what he did remember was that on that day, he received a call from our manager telling him that he did not need to come to work for the foreseeable future. This effectively left him jobless, a fate that befell him and millions of other Americans; according to the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, more than 20.6 million jobs were lost from mid-March to the end of April, a loss in employment not seen since the Great Depression in the 1930s . Businesses like restaurants were hit hardest under the pandemic, and workers like Juan were unfortunately affected financially from it. I asked Juan if he had been prepared for the issues that were about to ensue as a result of the coronavirus and he confided in me that he was not. The pandemic completely blindsided him. He had already been behind on his rent, and the loss of his job meant that paying rent was going to be much harder. In fact, by the end of March, Juan told me that he had to borrow $1,000 from his father just so that he keep up with his payments. Apparently even his own father was surprised at his predicament, as he told me that his father did indeed lend him the money that he asked for, as he knew Juan was not someone who asked for money unless he really needed it. Eventually he ended up coming back to work, which allowed him to get his finances in order. I told him that he must have felt relieved, which he promptly told me was the case. And just in time as well, as according to CNBC in July 2020, as up to 40 million Americans could lose their housing . I then asked him how he spent his days during the beginning of the pandemic. He told me that he mostly had free time to draw and go online, not too different from what he normally did. Of course, he also told me that by the second week, he was tired of being inside all the time. When I asked him if he would have risked COVID-19 just so that he could go back to work, he said he would have definitely taken the risk. Juan, like many other low-income workers, uses public transportation to get to and from other places. In his case, he takes the bus. I wondered if there any risk in taking public transportation while the pandemic was in effect, but according to the website Scientific American, the risk of catching COVID-19 from riding public transportation is not significantly higher than was once originally thought . Afterwards, I thanked Juan for allowing me to interview him for this project. He said it was no problem, but also said he didn’t think his experiences were worth writing about. I told him everyone deserves to have their voices heard and that his experiences will help illuminate future generations on how COVID-19 affected people from all walks of life. Text Any textual data included in the document 3 October 2020 – Looking Back on the Oncoming Storm Wanda Koger is a 62 year old resident of Piscataway, New Jersey. She lives with her husband, her younger son, and two of her nephews. On October 3rd, 2020, she was interviewed by her younger son, Donald Koger to document her memories of the days surrounding the March 11, 2020 declaration by the World Health Organization that COVID-19 had become a pandemic. She remembers thinking that things would only get worse as time went on. From the early days of the COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020, Wanda Koger experienced anxieties regarding the safety and security of her loved ones. Even Before the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 health crises a pandemic, she worried that the virus would spread far and wide, and the world would struggle to face the health and economic effects of the damage it would inflict on an unprepared world. She recalls doubting the information that was released by the Chinese government, such as that children were essentially immune and how contagious the virus was believed to be. Wanda remembers, “Maybe they weren’t just saying certain things so that people wouldn’t panic. They really had the brains to know that China was lying to them and things were way worse than what they said they were.”<a href="#_ftn1">[1]</a> Her biggest concern was the safety of her family. She remembers hanging a sign asking that people not ring the doorbell and instead call her on the phone. While she says having her son and husband working from home changed the dynamic of the household, the time at home also provided for communal meals, which had often been skipped due to the hectic schedule of everyone in the household. In early March onward, she says that she was not able to see her grandchildren in person. Instead, while picking up or leaving groceries from her older son’s porch, she could wave at them through the windows. While the household was mostly secured early on, uncertainty involved the school that her older nephew, who had previously lived with her, was attending. The school he was attending did not decide to close until March 16th, and it was an abrupt change where she had to drive several hours to pick him up. Once the household was established, it was a matter of trying to keep pace with a changing landscape of obtaining household items and groceries. She tried to limit her trips to the grocery store and used online shopping along with sharing shopping responsibilities with her older son’s household, which them involved exchanging groceries and supplies by leaving them outside each other’s houses without coming in direct contact. The strangest element of the early days of the pandemic was the shortage of toilet paper.
