<text>Today, Tuesday, March 10th

The threat of Covid-19 has landed. My Supervisor at the art gallery in Newark directed me to cancel all upcoming public programs. This means it’s officially a crisis, and I have no groceries in my apartment. I usually shop on Thursdays. But, I’m hearing reports of crowded stores and panic shopping. So, I’ve gotta go TONIGHT, after work – which is the worst time to shop in a crisis. Otherwise, shopping in a densely populated city is ideal between 8pm-10pm. My experience bunkering in South Florida during multiple hurricane seasons taught me how to weather the storm. In my mind, we’ll be okay as long as this virus isn’t airborne and the electrical grid stays in tact.

I’m tired before I even leave the office. Because I rely on mass-transit, I know this is gonna be a long night in Jersey City. I only have three days to find everything I need for quarantine. Friday needs to be my last day out and about. So, if I don’t find supplies tonight at least I’ll have three more days to try. This way, I’ll have ample opportunity to visit numerous stores in several neighborhoods before the end of the week. My first stop is the herbal teashop in my neighborhood to stock up on tea, raw honey, and herbs for immune support. The chatter in here is dense as the naturalists debate the benefits of elderberry syrup versus oregano oil to stave off or quickly recover from a virus.

My second stop is the pharmacy: 8:27PM. When I talked to Papa earlier in the day, he said he was all set for quarantine – he just needed to pickup his prescriptions. I volunteered. I hadn't stopped by this past weekend for my weekly visit. I was busy working on a project. I want Papa to know that I’ve got his back. There’s already speculation his demographic is especially vulnerable. He lives in a senior citizen building. Not sure if they will impose a no-visitor rule like in New York City. Either way, with the impending nationwide lockdown, I have the vague notion that I won’t see him for a while.

My third stop is Shop-Rite supermarket to stock up on red lentils. I just need two bags to get me through four weeks. But, the bean aisle has been raided. Uh-oh… This first warning-signal registers. Beans are the cornerstone of my strategy. This aisle is always fully loaded. This means non-vegetarians are preparing to part with their Standard American Diet (SAD).

Next stop, BJ’s Wholesale Shopping Club next door. Although I usually shop for groceries once per week, I’m planning for fourteen days. The gallery is telling staff to prepare to work from home for two weeks. If that’s the case, I don’t want to deal with leaving my apartment at all for that time too. Even though BJ’s inventory is still recovering from the routine weekend shoppers, I’m still optimistic that I can find the staples around the perimeter. Nope! These shelves have been raided too. Now, like Whoopi Goldberg’s character Oda Mae told Sam’s girlfriend in Ghost (1990): “Molly, you in danger girl…” Gotta leave here with something. New strategy: 4 bags/ 16 pounds of frozen vegetables, 2 bags/ 10 pounds of apples, 2 containers/ 2 pounds of Planter’s Pecan Lovers Mix nuts. Not confident these perishables are gonna hold me over for two weeks. Check Out: 9:33pm. This place is deserted… in every way.

I walk 8 minutes to my last bus stop for the night. Made it just in time for the NJTransit #80 pickup at 9:45pm. I wrestle with my heavy bulky bags down the center aisle to the back row so I can spread out and not share airspace. Free-floating funky aromas predate Dr. Fauci’s social distancing advice. It takes 25 minutes to ride 1.2 miles. I’m home before 10:30pm. Exhausted. But, the search for red lentils and other non-perishables continues tomorrow… </text>

<text>Small Business: Downtown Jersey City Italian Restaurant

On, Wednesday, September 23rd, I met with Elena Cartagena, owner of an Italian restaurant located in downtown Jersey City. We met for lunch at another local restaurant, DOMODOMO. Sushi is her favorite, and I decide it’s worth checking out based on her review. I’ve known Elena since the fourth grade. Life has taken many twists and turns since then. Although we’ve compared notes throughout the pandemic, I’ve asked her to share her experience as a restaurant owner during the first days of the pandemic.

To start, her primary concern is exposing her mother, a senior citizen, with whom she shares a multi-family home. She explains that they each have a floor. But, on top of age considerations, her mother was healing from a recent surgery in the early days of the pandemic.

The week of Sunday, March 8th is a rough one. Although she recently bought a liquor license, she can’t use it. “I found out from my lawyer that my neighbor, the Jehovah Witness temple, still hadn’t signed off.” She can’t serve alcohol until they respond. According to Elena, New Jersey requires establishments to seek out permission to serve alcohol from their immediate non-competitor neighbors. The restaurant has been a BYOB (“bring your own booze”) spot since it opened for dine-in service in Fall 2015. Despite encroachment of two well-funded Italian restaurants with bar service, traffic was steady. The fresh pasta counter and dinner service sustained the business. But serving alcohol would position the restaurant to attract more customers and better profit margins. So, when a liquor license became available for purchase last winter, she and her sister collaborated to purchase it – the equivalent of a house mortgage. But, by Friday, March 13th, the impending nationwide shutdown had significant consequences. “Means, we never got a chance to even make money with it AND we don’t know if or when we will. It’s a big investment and we don’t know what’s going to happen next.”

The official declaration of the Covid-19 pandemic is a hard pivot point for all public-facing enterprises. According to Wired contributor, Joe Ray, by late March even wealthy restaurateurs worried about shuttered doors:

Across the country, restaurant sales took a nosedive. Shifts were shortened, and then cut. And then the layoffs and closings began, each day bringing a new disaster. Tom Douglas, one of Seattle's best-known chefs, temporarily shut 12 of his 13 restaurants in the city and laid off almost all his staff. New York restaurateur Danny Meyer laid off 80 percent of his workers at his Union Square Hospitality Group in New York. After a March 17 White House meeting with representatives of national chains like Domino's and McDonald's, which largely ignored independent restaurant owners, Momofuku chef David Chang tweeted "We are so fucked." [1]

Restaurants scrambled to adapt to legal restrictions while patrons disappeared. No diners, no income. Initially, patrons were reluctant to venture out for pick-up or to trust delivery. Remember, at this point, people are circulating videos about washing hands and disinfecting groceries. Although she had previous contracts with UberEats and DoorDash, these online apps ate up significant profits. For this reason, this restaurant, like so many others, depended on dine-in service. For example, on our ride-along tour of downtown restaurants, Elena points out an expensive steakhouse with a large dining room: “Their whole setup is designed to attract people to sit down, inside! There is no outdoor patio – they can’t even improvise one [the sidewalk is too narrow]. Plus, their clientele is not paying those prices to sit on a parklet.” Likewise, Elena uses the steakhouse to illustrate the main reason why she thinks her restaurant has survived: adaptability.

Still, adaptability is expensive. She tells me that Sunday, March 15th was the last day for dine-in service. That was the last day for all but one of her staff – the chef! Although Elena cut down overhead costs, her confidence in the future was shaken by the massive layoff. Similarly, two Washington, D.C. restaurateurs described their experience firing staff this way: "Trying to explain to your staff that they have to be laid off is like something that you feel in your heart,” Vázquez-Ger said. Limardo, meanwhile, called it “probably the worst day of my life." [2] Of those first few days, Elena was also afraid of concentrated exposure as she managed the shift to order pick-ups by customers and delivery drivers (UberEats / DoorDash). I mention to Elena reports [3] of diners not tipping, being rude, or leaving nasty reviews – all behaviors noted for their lack of grace, patience, and empathy during a pandemic. She responds by adding, “Yea, I’m sure the isolation doesn’t help. People forget they’re dealing with real humans – not autobots.” [4]

[4] Autobots makes reference to the animated cartoon series turned live-action blockbuster movie, Transformers. Further, autobots are robots from another planet. They represent the “good guys” that come to Earth to save the humans from the aggressive takeover by the bad robots, Decepticons. </text>

The joke quickly changed its tone as New York had its first case and spread exponentially: posters were put up to promote awareness, and big events were getting closed down very quickly. Despite the noticeable change in the atmosphere, people were aloof throughout New York, ignoring social guidelines and warnings, continuing their lives in a typical fashion. Vidya couldn’t help but share this nonchalance as she was socially coerced into meetings and lunches despite the rumored warnings and quickly became desensitized. The toilet paper war was on, and Vidya was a serious “Warrier” in this battle as well. Although she found the whole situation somewhat amusing and asinine, she was still forced to stock up as the downward spiral of competition and capitalism took effect. Going to the vitamin, grocery, and Indian stores, Vidya stocked up on herbs and dietary supplements, but also essential staples like dal and rice. Additionally, at home, she turned to her developing YouTube channel (The Dancing Warrier) to record her experiences with the virus and the emerging social atmosphere. This began before she was quarantined and continued well into her isolation as it depicted her newly secluded, and somewhat freeing life. <br /><br /> For Vidya, the initial carelessness had severe consequences. In early March, Johnson and Johnson had its first case of Coronavirus; an employee on Vidya's floor contracted the Coronavirus from her husband, who recently returned from Italy on a business trip. Concerned, the office closed down, but not before Vidya herself contracted the virus (tested a few days later, almost right as, or right before, tests started becoming available on March 5) and was faced with a reality unknown to the general American populace before the first wave happened and the pandemic was declared. <br /><br /> The exhaustion hit immediately – at home, Vidya felt the beckoning allure of her mattress and comforter, preferring to stay in bed all day with a rising fever and "feeling like something was off…feeling bad". To most, it would be natural to indulge in a frenzy of google searches, exploring cures, treatments, and home care to alleviate the symptoms and to confirm the diagnosis. For Vidya, who has lived her life studying and practicing yoga (specifically isha yoga) and spirituality, and even living much of her life under Sadhguru in the Isha Foundation, she was cautious and aware of the fragility of her psyche and the natural primal fear response that she would necessarily face. As such, withdrawing completely into her intense yogic practices and restorative silence, Vidya focused on spiritual practices centered around the breath and how it manifests in life and death. Although her past experience with yoga and comfort with metaphysical concepts like death prepared her for facing such a dangerous and significant affliction, Vidya found the experience of being infected as a cathartic and profound exploration into her relationship and attitudes towards death. To Vidya, the Coronavirus was a test of her will and ideologies in practices, and fortitude of spirit. Engaging in a modality of a simple diet, powerful mantric-centered meditation, spiritual yogic practices, and ayurvedic and other home remedies, Vidya found the Coronavirus as a method of introspection and a source of spiritual "bliss". Many of her accounts and emotions were recorded and archived in real time through her YouTube channel which she found to be a healthy outlet for her expression. She made videos about her new diet and style of cooking, new habits and daily routines, as well as very raw accounts of her experiences with COVID and the effect of her yogic practices on her situation.<br /><br /> These were the first days for Vidya, before life changed in any notable way for most Americans. The genesis for her relationship with COVID predated the March 11 CDC announcement and general societal chaos. Although she ascribed to the classic stocking-up practices and nonchalant attitude widely shared by many in society in late February/early March, Vidya had a unique experience being infected by the Coronavirus early on. It tested her roots, but her spirituality and yogic treatments made these times a transformative experience for her.</text>

              <text><div style="text-align:center;"><strong>Far from Home</strong></div>
<br /> After the fear that I felt for Ebola, this novel Coronavirus honestly seemed like a joke. The 2014 outbreak scared me as a child of 13 years, as did the Zika virus, which followed in its footsteps; however, the non-existent impact that both viruses had on my life instilled a false sense of security in my mind. Thus, the Coronavirus seemed like nothing new – it would be a virus that would rampage across specific areas in Asia and necessarily fall through as it reached the industrial walls of more developed countries. Although severely misplaced (and incredibly embarrassing to admit), my confidence in America's capitalistic greatness and selfishness assured me that I would be immune and safe in our bubble of money and advanced technology. By March 10, 2020, the news about the virus was spreading and becoming more serious, labeled as an epidemic and threatening Asia's entirety. My own apprehension only grew as the urgency of Rutgers University emails increased, and more and more events were canceled, along with labs and other social activities. Much of the danger behind the virus flew under the radar for me, as I was dreading an upcoming debate tournament for which I was severely underprepared and desperately hoping that it would be canceled. It was. Like Christmas come early, classes were closed prematurely before spring break, exams postponed, clubs and outside commitments canceled, and the campus attained a liminal status in which the students could enjoy themselves while not worrying about any work. At this point, "Corona" (which quickly became the new vernacular) seemed to be a blessing in disguise! <br /><br /> I woke up on the morning of March 11 to about 5 missed calls by my parents and a multitude of texts inquiring about the state of the virus and my speedy return home. The impending discussion included talks of expediated travel – bookings of flights were made, and apocalyptic rhetoric was thrown around casually as my parents insisted that we had to be together as the end of the world happened around me. Although they were excessive in their caution and worry, there was a change in the atmosphere and a sort of chill in the air throughout campus and in the dorms. Following the CDC's announcement on March 11, I soon realized the gravity of the situation that the world was in – this announcement was a critical turning point in the lens through which I was viewing the world. I was terrified not only for my parents and isolation from home, but also for my imminent travels, leaving my girlfriend, and not returning to campus for a long time. <br /><br /> The following day, I woke up to an incredible barrage of notifications inquiring after my health from friends, family, and acquaintance the like. I immediately called my parents, and they showed me this Facebook post made by my best friend's mother: The post, filled to the brim with tragedy and import, urged all those who knew me to pray for me and my uniquely dire situation as a student in New Jersey and my impending doom. The deluge of responses and worried queries were mortally embarrassing, albeit touching, but was very indicative of the romanticized and fearful narratives traversing the world. Within the campus, however, parties were rampant, and everyone was enjoying their free-time in a bubble of safety; fraternities were holding parties – one especially notable one was the "NOVID PARTY" - which blatantly disregarded all policies and caution. <br /><br /> The days around the announcement of the pandemic were chaotic, to say the least. From the complete disregard of rowdy undergraduates to my family indulging in the national toilet paper war, to my friend's creating an altar for me in their house, Coronavirus induced a noticeable volte-face of the people and society around me. Of course, this was nothing compared to the months that would follow, but there was a defined gradient of reaction that everyone followed: from excitement, to worry, to shock, and finally panic. These three days were suffused with emotion and activity, and I battled a two-sided confrontation between my life in Albuquerque and that at Rutgers-Newark.</text>

<text>The “First Days” of a Teacher<br />Alexander Tedesco<br /><br />On March 10th 2020, I was a 5th year student at The College of New Jersey. It was the finishing semester of my Master’s in Education. Student teaching was a serious commitment, as it was 8 AM until 3:15 PM most days. Afterwards, I would normally have a three hour class waiting for me later that evening. In other words, I was teaching 40 hours a week in a Trenton public school, while also having to attend class four out of those five days. In the simplest words, I was a full time teacher, as well as a full time student. I enjoyed my life, as I loved my students dearly and was invested in my classes as both teacher and student in many amazing ways. It still bothered me to see my friends go out every night, as I stayed behind either too busy or too exhausted to come along.<br /><br />Then it simply all stopped.<br /><br />The morning of March 10th was no different from any other day. I woke up and put myself together for another day of teaching. These days, conversations of my 4th grade students drifted from innocence to dark concern over this unknown COVID-19. Trying to be a responsible adult, I would typically brush these conversations aside. Before the 10th I would say “The virus is only in China.” Days later it was upon the west coast. Soon after, right in the middle of Mercer county. I would make jokes about “The Ides of March” being upon us (such a history teacher thing to say), and the “dark days upon us.” I was never serious, and my students knew it.<br /><br />That evening existed different from no other. I made dinner, hit the gym, and prepared myself for yet another day of my busy lifestyle. I checked my email before I went to sleep. An email from my cooperating teacher explained that school was cancelled for the remainder of the week, and that I was to be off until Monday. He finished the email as so: “Envoy the break as well as the peace and quiet, but if you’d ask me, I’d say get ready for a long couple of months.” I was thrilled to have a break, as I was definitely overworked. However, with the death and destruction to come, how dare I to have ever welcomed so horrible. If only I had known.</text>
