Meanwhile, in India...
The 2020 election is dominating global media. Kashmir, India, in contrast, is (ironically, and possibly luckily) attracting limited attention. The region has shockingly limited internet access, currently running a 2G network. 2G wireless is extremely outdated. Such poor internet access threatens to hamstring healthcare systems throughout Kashmir, as it takes hours to download necessary information like COVID-19 guidelines (etc.). Doctors should have better access to the information they need. Despite India's recent rhetoric to provide better internet to its citizens (a few reports have confirmed minimal progress), the spottiness and unreliability of the network in Kashmir decreases information exchange and creates an "information black hole" in the region.
Violent and terrible events continue to compound in Kashmir. The region is currently experiencing a nationalistic and militaristic pull from three sides, a rampant and dangerous pandemic, and attempts to accomodate a new era of tourism. In some sort of twisted irony, this region is currently experiencing the worst narratives that the world has to offer: imperialism, capitalism, settler colonialism, as well as other related narratives. Citizens of Kashmir are constantly forced to confront such realities everytime they step outside their door. This snowballing series of events has created a very toxic environment for these civilians.
Stories of Kashmiri children are almost unheard of. Growing up in a community plagued with militarism, political division, oppression, and confusion, these children experience endless violence and their rights are consistently suprressed. On top of all of that, misinformation and fear-mongering related to Covid-19 has resulted in a serious mental health epidemic amongst many of these kids. Psychiatrists are considering possible interventions and resolutions. For example, some suggest limiting the distribution of COVID-19 related information. Other strategies to prevent further emotional damage are also being considered.
