The French domestic league surprisingly took a different approach than the English, Italian, Spanish, and German leagues. Although the COVID-19 cases in France during March-May were not significantly higher than their neighbors, France's soccer federation made a radical decision with regards to the 2019-2020 season.

The soccer federation cancelled the 2019-2020 season entirely instead of continuing the league after a short delay. PSG were crowned champions even though there were still 10 more games to play. Due to their successful campaign last season and a wide point gap they had between Marseille (the second-placed team) France's soccer federation decided not to take any risks by continuing the league from where it left off. Teams that were in the relegation zone were also pardoned due to the coronavirus.

France was not the only league in Europe that cancelled the 2019-2020 season. The Dutch league (Eredivisie), and the Belgian League also cancelled their seasons respectively.

The 2020-2021 season of Ligue 1 started a week earlier than other soccer leagues across Europe. As of now, the current season is in continuation. Coronavirus is impacting French soccer as club members are falling victim to the disease. Teams are encountering problems because various players test positive for the virus.
