Turkey's Top-tier League During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The Turkish soccer federation postponed Super Lig soccer games considerably late when compared to the other leagues of Europe. During March, cases in Turkey were relatively low. While countries like China, Italy and South Korea were struggling to deal with the deadly disease, coronavirus was not regarded as serious in Turkey at the time.
After the Spanish, French, German, English and Italian domestic leagues were stopped, the Turkish league continued for a while. Along with the Belarussian league, the Turkish league was the only league to still continue with games. It was not until late-March when the league was postponed until further notice. In late-March, especially in April cases in Turkey were skyrocketing. The government responded by enforcing curfews and rules for the population to follow. Players and coaches were speaking out against the Turkish federations late decision. Galatasaray S.K.'s goalkeeper spoke out in a press conference after the game Galatasaray vs. Besiktas was played behind closed doors. He said that players had families to look after and that games should be postponed.
After two months, the league resumed in June with 8 more games to go. Trabzonspor and Istanbul Basaksehir had the same points but Trabzonspor was the leader because of the goal difference. The fans were initially not allowed to attend games. This was sad for many Turkish soccer fans. Turkish fans are well-known for being passionate supporters. The 2019-2020 season ended in late July. Istanbul Basaksehir claimed its first-ever title. The club was formed in 2014 and after six years they achieved their dreams. The Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth was the top goal scorer in the league with 24 goals.
The Turkish soccer federation made a radical decision after the troubled 2019-2020 soccer season came to an end. The head of the federation pardoned the teams that finished the season in the relegation zone. The teams that were to be promoted from the lower league joined the 2020-2021 campaign. For the first time in history, Turkey started a season with 21 teams. The new season started in September.
Because there were 21 teams, the fixtures became extremely tight. During January and February teams will be playing 2 games a week. The busy schedule already seems to trouble clubs. Players are getting injured for training extensively.
Many Players and coaches are tested positive for the virus. This has posed a challenge this year. 2 teams, Ankaragucu and Hatay still have games to play. The game was postponed because both sides had players that tested positive for COVID-19 right before the game was set to start.
Turkish soccer is also going through a tough time financially. Clubs are having difficulties paying their debts. Although the fans sitting in the VIP section of the stadium are allowed, there is still a major loss because the rest of the seats are empty. The clubs cannot make money from their fans.
The league is expected to end in May. As of now, Alanyaspor, the dark horses are leading the table. There are still 25 games to go but it already seems like it is an interesting season.
